WHERE 11,000 young Americans ARE forever remembered

Along the bluffs above Omaha Beach some 11,000 young Americans lie at rest. Almost all Europe's languages are heard among the visitors paying homage.

Walk along the actual front line on the afternoon of D day and realise how close disaster came. The situation turned around when US Navy and Royal Navy destroyers closed to within a thousand yards of the beach and at the risk of running aground, provided the desperate regimental combat teams with point-blank naval gunfire support - above all, to quote Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery "By the extreme courage of the American Troops".

VISITORS

If you wish to find the grave of a relative the Visitor Centre will help and the cemetery is very clearly laid out.

The clock plays a selection of American folk songs on its carillon and taps is sounded and the flags lowered at the end of each day.
