PORTSMOUTH NAVAL BASE - THE HUB OF D-DAY OPERATIONS

During our return we'll fly over Portsmouth Harbour - home to the Royal Navy and Nelsons Flagship "HMS VICTORY". Portsmouth was the hub of D-day operations in June 1944 as it was again in April 1982 for the re-capture of The Falkland Isles.

250 Years of Naval history in a single image. Nelson's Flagship H.M.S Victory with its modern day counter part the Carrier H.M.S Ark Royal. The Royal Navy's 400 Year mastery of the sea's (since Drake defeated the Spanish Armada) played a pivotal role in the planning and execution of the armada that allowed for D-Day Operations

Ike's Headquarters for Overlord - Southwick House near Portsmouth, England

Just to the North of Portsmouth is Southwick House, Eisenhower's headquarters for Overlord and from where on June 5th, 1944 at approx 9pm. Eisenhower gave the order to 'GO' - just 3 short hours later British and American Airborne forces were landing in Normandy.

Although a full day, ’ says Adrian of the Overlord D Day tours, ‘ the experience is never less than engrossing, often moving – younger people become awed by the huge risk involved, the slender thread between success and disaster, the raw courage and sacrifice of their grandfathers’ generation. Besides, what better way to learn about D Day – few children grow bored flying 200 feet above the sea towards the wallowing caissons of the Mulberry Harbour.'

' And mothers need not fear " swooping " to quote one American lady who despite a little trepidation on the ground beforehand thoroughly enjoyed the flying. '

Finally we land back at Biggin Hill and our waiting limousine returns you to your hotel.
