NORMANDY COAST AHEAD Captain Frank L Lillyman, commanding the 101 Airborne Division's Pathfinder Detachment, landed ahead of the entire invasion at 15 minutes past midnight as first liberator on the ground in Normandy. The photo below right shows the British pathfinders - Bobby deLatour, Don Wells, John Vischer and Bob Midwood - synchronising their watches before leading the 6th Airborne Division into occupied Europe. Bobby deLatour's boots touched down on the Normandy turf at about 18 minutes past midnight. The British gliders landed beside Pegasus Bridge around 30 minutes past midnight.
Normandy coast ahead. Left photo - closing on the estuary of the River Dives where William the Conqueror assembled his fleet in 1066. Centre photo - flying at the same height as the sky train on the night of D Day, approaching the mouth of the River Orne and its wide canal. The British and Canadian drop zones straddle the canal. British and Free French commandos came ashore near Riva Bella, the small resort on the right of the picture. |
